She is a komainu youkai who protects places of religious worship. She was a komainu statue until the ”Four Seasons Incident” in the 16th Touhou game and is briefly mentioned in Wild and Horned Hermit. During this incident Okina places a backdoor onto Aunn, who was still a statue at the time. The door then began emitting magical energy which turned Aunn into a sentient youkai.
