Keisuke Yamanami is one of the two vice-commanders for the Shinsengumi. He is a master of the Hokushin-itto-ryuu swordsmanship style. Yamanami is often called "Sannan" (an alternate reading of the Kanji characters in his name) by both Hijikata and Kondou.
